Chapter 15

LEE

“Who really knows?” Lee said. “She’s a mental.”

Weaver’s confusion melted into a scowl. “That isn’t very kind.”

“It’s a statement of fact. She’s got mental issues and she’s off her meds, using booze to take the edge off. Who can say what goes on in her mind?”

She shook her head. “I don’t get you.”

“What’s to get?” Lee dropped the patrol car into gear and pulled away from the curb.

“You were nice to her, but now—”

“Why wouldn’t I be? What, are you disappointed I wasn’t a jerk? Doesn’t fit the narrative for you?”

She leaned away. “No, I’m not disappointed. Pleasantly surprised, actually.”

Lee brought up the call on the MDC, glancing down while he drove. “I’m sure.”

Weaver didn’t respond.

Lee punched in his clearance code from the previous call and hit send. The MDC beeped in response. Less than three seconds later, the dispatcher’s voice broke into the tense silence of the patrol cruiser.

“Charlie-409 and Charlie-411?”

Lee reached for the mic, waiting until Murph answered up before following suit. “Four-eleven, go ahead.”

The dispatcher rattled off an address. Lee immediately adjusted his route to start that direction before she’d finished describing the call.

“Possible domestic order violation. Female caller stated ‘he is here’ before leaving the line open. Nine-one-one operators can hear a discussion between a male and a female in the background.” The dispatcher broke the transmission for a full second, then continued. “The address shows a Marsha Gold and Timothy Colton. Several DV entries over the past two years. Gold is the petitioner of a current DVOP with Colton as the respondent.”

Murph copied the call, then asked the dispatcher to have records pull the order and confirm it. Once the dispatcher copied the request, Lee added his own acknowledgment.

“I need to take this call before I can drop you off,” he said evenly. “Unless you want to stay, that is.”

“I wasn’t the one who wanted to end our ride. I told you I’m in it for the long haul.”

Salter already felt like a fool for losing his cool in front of a schoolteacher. He really didn’t want Mel to ride with him all night, but he’d be damned if he was going to quit when she wasn’t.

“Fine,” he said.

“So, where are we headed? A domestic abuse call?”

“Order violation.”

She didn’t reply. He knew she was waiting for him to fill in some of the gaps, to educate her on the call, to explain the nuances of it. But he wasn’t ready to fully embrace their treaty again. So, he kept quiet and drove.

Murph checked out on-scene about twenty seconds before they arrived.

The turn before the address, Lee shut off all the patrol car’s lights and hit the MDC’s on-scene button. He parked a few yards behind Murph’s car. As Lee climbed out of the car, he noticed Weaver doing the same.

“You can wait here if you want.”

She seemed offended at his suggestion. “I’m not waiting in the car.”

“It’s not safe.”

“I’m not waiting.”

Lee hesitated. Murph was waiting for him, likely already posted up outside the door of the residence, listening for any signs of an ongoing assault.
